Fly over across the Nazca Desert, situated in southern Peru, look down onto the vast stretches of stone desert, and you won’t miss these enormous Geoglyphs. These are huge drawings made on the ground of these deserts hundreds of centuries ago.
Unlike other deserts, this desert is made of dark stones. There is scarcely any water, and the chances of erosion is also very slim. Hence the rocks stay there untouched. Due to various weather conditions and chemical changes, these rocks grow rusty and darken with time, thus creating a “natural blackboard”. These enormous drawings were created by removing these rocks and exposing the bright clean sand underneath.
The most amazing fact is that these drawings are so huge and stretches across vast regions, that they can be recognized and appreciated only from a height of at least 300m above ground. The question now which comes to our mind is how these native Nazca Indians (supposedly) acquired the intelligence, equipment, skills of engineering and observation for pulling off a project of this huge a scale (literally!).
The next apparent question which puzzles us is why. Why did they go through the trouble of creating these gigantic illustrations? There are many theories and interpretations as to why they might have done so. Of course none of them is for sure. Some theories say that this might have been an attempt to communicate with aliens, or Inca traders. While some say that the lines may have been canals or ways to mark positions of some sort of secret water source, as water in these regions is very scarce. Some argue that the drawings are backed probably by some religious beliefs, and scriptures. Anyway one might never know. Its one of those great mysterious treasures earth has left for us to find out about, or to never be answered and only to be wondered about.
